Email Accounts
- What is a POP3 account?
- A POP3 account is an online "mailbox" that holds your emails on the server until you download the emails off the server onto your own PC and view them with an email program. An email program is software that runs on your computer, such as "Outlook Express" or "Eudora" or "Pegasus Mail". While there are many email programs, we suggest you consider using "Mozilla Thunderbird" which is an open source, stable, easy-to-use, and best of all automatically and simply captures spam emails for you.
- What is an IMAP account?
An IMAP account is an online "mailbox" that securely keeps your emails stored on the server. This allows you to "temporarily" download emails to view on any PC. The advantage with an IMAP account is no matter where you go, you can always read your emails, even on a web browser.
IMAP allows users to access new messages instantly on their computers, since the mail is stored on the network. With POP3, users either download the email to their computer or access it via the web. Both POP3 methods take longer than IMAP, and the POP3 user must either download any new mail or "refresh" the page to see the new messages.
When using POP3, clients typically connect to the email server briefly, only as long as it takes to download new messages. When using IMAP, clients often stay connected as long as the user interface is active downloading message content on demand. For users with a large number of messages or large size messages, IMAP can result in faster response times.
The POP3 protocol requires the currently connected client to be the only client connected to the mailbox. In contrast, the IMAP protocol specifically allows simultaneous access by multiple clients and provides mechanisms for clients to detect changes made to the mailbox by other, concurrently connected, clients.
IMAP clients can create, rename, and/or delete mailboxes (usually presented to the user as folders) on the server, and move messages between mailboxes. Multiple mailbox support also allows servers to provide access to shared and public folders.
- Do you support ASP mail or any kind of FormMail program?
- Yes we do support ASP MAIL and also FormMail with both our UNIX and WINDOWS hosting plans. If you would like to use ASP MAIL, you will have to host your website with one of our Windows Plans. If you are interested in using FormMail (or other CGI scripts), we recommend you to host your website on one of our UNIX Plans.
- Do you offer auto responders?
- Every VisPerNET Estate Account (Plan) has auto responders for Email. An auto responder is an email address that sends an automated response back to every email address it received a message from. You will be able to define the subject and content of the email that gets sent back in your hosting control panel.
- Do you offer email redirects?
Yes, you can redirect your emails to another email address. It is an email address, not an email mailbox (POP3 or IMAP) that forwards emails to another email address.
Email redirects can also be used to generate alias names for your POP3 or IMAP account. For example, create the user "info" with an email address of "info@yourdomain.com" (please note that in this FAQ, we always use "yourdomain.com" as a placeholder for your actual domain name). For this email address, you could add an email redirect name of "myname@yourdomain.com" that forwards email to your POP3 or IMAP mailbox "info@yourdomain.com".
- What is VisPerNET's policy on "SPAM" and "unsolicited emails"?
We do not permit the sending of unsolicited commercial email or "spam". We reserve the right to immediately terminate any domain without warning and without refund that sends out unsolicited commercial email.
If you are sending emails for other than personal use, and to be in compliance with the current Internet email standards, businesses must create an OPT-IN list. That means you collect and maintain the email addresses of individuals who have given you permission to send them emails.
Services and Features
- Do you support Macromedia Shockwave and Flash?
- Multimedia utilities are fully supported by our servers including JAVA applets. All VisPerNET web hosting supports any Flash and Shockwave technology. Websites designed using Flash, and Flash and Shockwave movies will run perfectly on VisPerNET's servers.
- Can I access my account using telnet/SSH?
- Remote interactive access via telnet or SSH functions only with UNIX, however, this service is not supported by VisPerNET.com due to security considerations. Instead, we offer an advanced Web Shell program which allows you to manage your files, directories and file permissions online from your browser.
- Do you support SSL?
Yes we do support SSL. With a SSL certificate you can have a secure website. You can either purchase your own Private SSL Certificate during the sign-up of your VisPerNET Estate Account or you can use the FREE Shared SSL certificate included in every VisPerNET Estate Account (Plan). You may also buy your own certificates from another provider if you wish.
The SSL security protocol provides data encryption, server authentication, message integrity, and optional client authentication for a TCP/IP connection. Because SSL is built into all major browsers and web servers, simply installing a digital certificate turns on their SSL capabilities.
- What is the difference between UNIX and Windows accounts?
Choose Windows if you want to use Active Server Pages, VB Scripting, Server Side Includes .NET or Visual Basic, MS Access databases, MS SQL 2000 databases, Cold Fusion or Web Trends Statistics.
Choose UNIX if you want to use Java development and applications, MySQL databases, PHP, Perl or Webalizer Statistics.
